Will using Makaton stop somebody from talking?
No, providing speech is always used when signing. Research has shown that Makaton supports and encourages spoken language
Is Makaton the same as BSL?
No, BSL is a language in its own right, used by the deaf community and has regional variations. Although Makaton signs have been created from BSL, they are used with speech, in spoken word order and designed to support communication for those who can hear, with communication and learning difficulties. Makaton signs have also been standardised across the country.
What difficulties are helped by using Makaton?
All types of communication and learning difficulties, including:
Profound, severe, moderate or mild learning difficulties
Autism
Physical impairment
Sensory impairment
Specific Language difficulties
Makaton has also been found to help those for whom English is not their first language and in mainstream schools.
What happens if I miss a module during the workshop?
If you miss a workshop module, you will not receive your certificate and would be unable to complete the level.
Can I share a screen with my friend/relative?
Yes, a screen can be shared with a maximum of 2 participants
