Connection starts with communication
About Sign Possible
Hi, I’m Kaley, a licensed Makaton Tutor, founder of Sign Possible, and proud SEND mum to two wonderful boys, Rui and Rocco. Rui was nonverbal for over five years. Now he’s got a handful of words and a whole lot to say and Makaton helps him say it. Rui is the reason I began learning Makaton, and the heart behind everything I do at Sign Possible.
I know how overwhelming learning Makaton can feel. When Rui’s Speech and Language Therapist first introduced it to us in 2020, it felt like a whole new language and honestly, a bit impossible. Once we learned the basics however, it became not only manageable, but life-changing. Makaton gave Rui a way to be heard and understood, and gave our family a way to truly connect.
Through Sign Possible, my mission is to raise Makaton awareness and help others experience the same joy and empowerment Makaton has brought us. Whether you're a parent, carer, educator, or professional, just starting out or continuing your training, I’d love to support your journey.
Because learning Makaton isn’t impossible, it’s Sign Possible.
About Makaton
Makaton is a unique communication programme that combines speech with signs (gestures) and/or symbols (pictures), all used in spoken word order to support communication. It helps build vital communication skills such as attention and listening, comprehension, memory, recall, and the ability to organise and express thoughts clearly. Communication is at the heart of everyday life. Whether it’s learning in school, asking for something we need, solving problems, making friends, or simply enjoying time with others; our ability to communicate shapes how we experience the world.
With Makaton, signs are used alongside spoken language, following the natural order of speech. This gives extra visual cues that make it easier to understand what’s being said. Signs are especially helpful for people who don’t speak or whose speech is difficult to understand. Symbols, whether printed or drawn, can support those with limited speech, or individuals who prefer not to use signs.
For anyone who has felt the frustration of not being able to express themselves or connect with others, Makaton can make a real difference. It breaks down barriers, allowing people to engage more fully with those around them; opening the door to new opportunities, relationships, and experiences. How amazing is that!
